There are so many aspects to this subject. As a follow up to the pregnancy & labor article from last week; let’s continue the discussion further and take a look at concerns that are unique to women. This is just a brief overview of some of the issues that can effect you during your menstrual cycle.
PMS
Pre-menstrual syndrome takes many forms. Mood swings, fatigue, bloating, and a change in appetite are just a few. Taking time for yourself and using essential oils to ease some of these symptoms can be a welcome relief for many women. Aromatherapy is a perfect way to relax, unwind and deal with stress. Some common symptoms of PMS are:
- Mood swings
- Fatigue
- Bloating
- Appetite
Dealing with these issues can be uncomfortable and frustrating. Below are some ideas for reducing the symptoms of PMS.
“Calm” – an inhaler blend: on the cotton wick drop 2 drops Neroli, 4 drops Orange and 2 drops Vanilla. This soothing scent relaxes the mind!
“Energize Me” – a diffuser blend: use 4 drops Lemon, 2 drops Basil and 1 drop Spearmint in your diffuser. Diffuse 30-60 minutes when you need an energy boost! This scent will invigorate & refresh you. Alternatively you can use Energy Synergy or Invigor Aid to help boost your energy levels.
“Ban the Bloat” – a simple massage blend: to 2 ounces of carrier add 4 drops Geranium, 6 drops Juniper Berry and massage the abdomen to reduce water retention. Please use this massage blend sparingly, banishing too much water from your system can be detrimental.
Simply sniffing Munchy Stop or Grapefruit essential oil can be useful to reduce cravings and keep your appetite in check.
Menstrual cramps
Cramping is a common concern for women during their menstrual cycle. In order to reduce symptoms there are several essential oils that might be useful during this time of the month.
- Cramp relief rub: to 1 ounce of carrier add Rapid Relief or Muscle Aid for a 2% dilution and apply to abdomen.
- Abdominal massage: to 1 ounce of carrier use 6 drops of Lavender and 6 drops of Rose Absolute use firm strokes on abdomen area to reduce pain, pressure and cramping.
Endometriosis
This condition is a result of uterine tissue growing outside of the uterine walls. This causes discomfort and the discomfort that accompanies this condition can be reduced by using essential oils. While using essential oils can help with symptom relief, it will not cure the condition. Once again, relieving the discomfort is the goal. You can use the above blends for menstrual cramps and then try this hip massage for further relief.
Hip Massage or warm bath
Recipe adapted from Valerie Worwood
In 3 ounces of carrier add (this is just over a 2% dilution)
- 20 drops Clary sage
- 10 drops Rose Absolute
- 4 drops Roman Chamomile
- 20 drops Geranium
- 16 drops Lavender
Using firm strokes, begin making clockwise circles on the abdomen. Work out toward the hips and lower back. Smooth the muscles of you hips down and out toward your thighs. Continue firm pressure from the waist to the thighs, over the hips. Move onto lower back and work from the spine out toward the sides. Alternatively you can use several drops of the stock blend in 1/2 cup epsom salt and run into a warm bath.
