Car Sickness and Essential Oils: Everything You Need to Know

For many of us, summer is the perfect time to hit the open road! With beautiful weather and a little extra time on your hands, a good traveling adventure is sometimes just what you need to clear your head and feel refreshed. While enjoying quality time with family and friends during a road trip can be wonderful, it can also cause some tummy upsets. While essential oils do not cure car sickness, they can sure help with some of those unpleasant symptoms!

Whether you suffer from motion sickness, snack on too much junk food, or just feel a little queasy when confined in close quarters, essential oils can get you (and your digestive system!) back on track.

Personal aromatherapy inhalers are powerful tools to take with you on your road trip. You can customize them for each person in your car and make a variety of them to cover specific needs — nausea, bloating, low energy, irritation — the possibilities are practically endless!

But for right now, let’s look at a few essential oils that are perfect to quell those upset stomachs and make everyone’s trip a whole lot more fun!

Essential oils for car sickness:

  1. Peppermint: Fresh and familiar, Peppermint Essential Oil is the perfect buddy to take with you on the road. Got a tummy in distress? Peppermint helps to relax the muscles of the gastrointestinal tract so that you can get on properly digesting. And when everything is moving along like it should be, say goodbye to feeling cramped, bloated, and gassy . It is also known for easing feelings of nausea, making it perfect for anyone who tends to get motion sickness when they are in a car for too long.
  2. Ginger Root CO2: Getting car sick can quickly destroy a road trip. Let’s not dive into the gross specifics of it, but basically, if there’s a way to help stop that nausea in its tracks, why not give it a try? You’ve probably heard of ginger snap cookies and ginger sodas to help a stomach on the edge, right? Well, the same concept applies to Ginger Essential Oil; it has shown to support a healthy digestive system overall, but especially when experiencing nausea . Inhaling it deeply is such a quick and easy way to settle the stomach down and get some relief!
  3. Cardamom: This spicy and warm essential oil is a great go-to for helping to relieve nausea, abdominal cramping, and gas. That makes it perfect for long car rides that can cause discomfort on long road trips.

Use these oils alone or blend them together to create a very effective inhaler blend that will help keep tummies calm and comfortable!
