5 Tips for Switching to Natural Skincare

Our skin is the largest organ in our bodies. It’s also one of the first things people notice about us. And it also has the ability to absorb part, or most, of what we put on it. All the more reason to take excellent care of it! If you’re looking to make a switch to more natural, clean ingredients in your skincare routine, check out a few of our top tips.

Keep It Real

GC/MS testing and why you should care

As we start to be more conscious of what we put in and on our bodies, it can get overwhelming very quickly. Trying to decipher ingredient labels, budget in the extra expense, and researching products can make the process seem too intense to even bother. As with any change, things take time. Instead of tossing all your products, start slow. When your favorite face cream runs out, instead of stocking up with your usual from the drugstore, take time to research a more natural alternative (or make one yourself). As you replace each product, pay attention to how your skin does or doesn’t change. It’ll be much easier to gauge what’s actually working for you than if you started from scratch. Before you know it, you’ll only be using nature’s goodness to keep your skin fresh and glowing.

Keep it Simple

Creams, serums, lotions, butters, masks, peels, scrubs… and the list goes on. There are many, many products out there and it’s easy to think you definitely need all of them. But it’s really about figuring out what your particular needs are. A great place to start is with determining your skin type: oily, dry, or combination. That will help you decide the basics of your skincare routine. From there, you can make a short checklist of issues you want to improve, everything from dark circles and dry patches to redness and wrinkles. Then when you add products to your routine, you can know it’s targeting issues specific to your needs.

Keep It Oily

It’s no secret that we love essential oils. They are an amazing and natural way to care for your skin. But that’s not the kind of oil we’re talking about. For a long time, the prevailing belief was that to combat oily skin, you had to dry it out with harsh cleansers and toners. And let’s be honest, who really enjoyed that super tight feeling right after a face wash? Instead, the idea that using an oil cleanser to emulsify and remove excess oils and sebum is gaining traction (thank you Korean beauty!). It is an effective, gentle and moisturizing way to help clean your skin. It’s also important to follow it up with a gentle cleanser as part of the double cleanse method to make sure nothing is left behind. Another fantastic way to moisturize your skin, no matter the type, is with carrier oils. They’re great to use with your essential oils and they also have benefits of their own. Keep It Hydrated

Plant Therapy Body Butters

There’s a simple, natural way to help make sure your skin gets the moisture it needs: drink water! And no, the water in our coffee doesn’t count (even though we wish it did). Drinking the recommended amount of water each day can help improve your complexion and keep your skin hydrated. Once you’ve hydrated your skin from the inside, you can turn your attention to the outside. Adding a quality moisturizer to your daily routine can help your skin look soft, smooth and healthy. It’s also an important step in making sure your skin can absorb all the good stuff you’re using. What better way to moisturize than with our new Body Butters! They’re richly moisturizing and melt gently into your skin. Perfect for all skin types, these luscious creams help keep your skin glowing. Creamy shea makes this body butter especially nourishing and soothing for dry skin.

Even better, they’re available in three varieties. Tiare Flower has a gently sweet, fruity, heady, and attractive floral fragrance that smells like a hot tropical island night. Mimosa Cucumber Splash combines the fragrances of gentle citrus and crisp cucumber for a light, fruity scent that evokes a spa-like experience at home. And lastly, Naturally Unscented offers the perfect base for your favorite essential oil DIYs.

Keep it Crafty

Probably our favorite way to make your skincare routine more natural is to do it yourself! Creating your own products gives you complete control over what goes in them. Which means there’s no guesswork over what’s natural and what’s not. It also makes your skincare routine endlessly customizable. If you’re struggling with dry skin, you can choose ingredients like Shea or essential oils like Myrrh, Helichrysum or Lavender. If you have oily skin, you can go for ingredients like Grapeseed or essential oils like Tea Tree, Bergamot or Geranium. You can make serums or creams, do a double cleanse or don’t, the possibilities are endless! We have a number of easy, natural recipes to get you started on your natural skincare journey.
